Skipper Duncan Howarth hit a golden goal winner as East Grinstead II won the National 2nd XI Cup.

Howarth struck five minutes into extra time, deflecting Mike Holland’s pass into the net, as Grinstead beat Loughborough Students 3-2 at Bowdon. Goals from Holland and Henry Howe put Grinstead 2-0 ahead at half-time but the Students fought back in the second period.

This is the fifth national cup Grinstead have claimed this season.

Holland said: “The youngsters were tremendous. This has capped off a fabulous season for the team and the club.”

Brighton and Hove’s bid for national glory ended when they lost 2-1 to Eastcote in the National 2nd XI Trophy at Guildford.

Brighton had the majority of possession and went ahead from a penalty flick which was coolly converted by Mike Deller-Merricks just before half-time. But Eastcote equalised with 15 minutes to go and then scored a winner with 60 seconds left while Brighton had two players in the sin-bin.
