Whitehawk are two wins away from clinching the County League title.

A 4-2 victory over Mile Oak on Saturday means Hawks will be champions if they win their games against Eastbourne United tonight and at home to St Francis on Saturday.

Boss George Parris said: “We’re nearly there and it would be nice to win it in from of our own supporters, although the game against Eastbourne tonight will be another difficult one.”

Sam Crabb’s brace and strikes from Marc Whiteman and Josh Jones saw off a spirited Oak team who belied their bottom-of-the-table status to go in 2-2 at half-time.

Parris added: “It was a scrappy performance in the first half and Mile Oak made it difficult for us as we expected for a side fighting for their lives but we got the job done in the second half.”

Peacehaven need two wins from their last five games to clinch runners-up spot in their first season back in division one.

They ended Chichester’s bid for second place by coming from behind to win 3-1 at Oaklands Park thanks to goals from Rob O’Toole, Callum Saunders’ penalty and Tom Levitt.

Peacehaven had Craig Hall sent off for foul and abusive language but that did not take off the gloss off the result for boss Peter Edwards.

He said: “It was another tremendous effort but we have to keep going to get second. Whitehawk might slip up but we had to beat them on Easter Monday and couldn’t do that to have a chance of the title.

“We’re over the moon with the season we’ve had.”

At the bottom East Grinstead recorded back to back wins to move clear of the bottom three after Matt Crane’s second-half goal sunk Arundel at Mill Road.

Hailsham picked up a deserved point from a goalless draw at Wick while Pagham boss Dave Berkowitz is convinced his side can still finish outside the bottom three after a battling 1-1 draw at home to Redhill.

Michael Frangou rewarded what Berkowitz regarded as their best 45 minutes of the season to put Pagham ahead but Marcus Elliott equalised and home keeper Wes Hallett pulled off a spectacular late save to keep out Jon Difford’s effort.

Berkowitz said: “If we play like that I’m sure we can win three of our last five games. Redhill are a good side but we battered them in the first half and it should have been all over. It was a good point.”

Three goals in 13 second-half minutes from Charlie Ottway (two) and Nathan Milroy earned Crowborough a 3-2 win at Crawley Down to virtually guarantee their safety. Dan Sullivan and Tony Reid netted for the hosts.

Chris Maynard and Sam Palmer earned St Francis a 2-0 win at Eastbourne United while Selsey’s long trip to Lingfield ended in a 1-1 draw.
