Worthing Thunder are celebrating their first ever BBL play-off place after a weekend of fairytale finales.

Needing to win twice to secure their post-season ticket, Thunder edged a thriller at home to title-chasing Sheffield on Saturday, then produced a stunning comeback to beat hosts Plymouth in overtime last night.

The prize is a quarter-final trip on Friday to Newcastle, who were crowned champions as a result of Sheffield’s shock defeat in West Sussex.

Sheffield came from 20 points down to tie it up with a Mike Cook three just seven seconds from time but Thunder went straight down the other end for Evaldas Zabas to clinch a 97-95 win.

Thunder trailed by nine going into the last two minutes at Plymouth but Reggie Bratton hit three threes to help force overtime.

Having scored the last nine points of regulation, Thunder added the first seven of the extra period to run away with it 108-99.

Bratton’s 41 points included six threes from seven attempts.

Sherrad Prezzie-Blue added 17 points and Kadiri Richard 16 plus seven rebounds.
