Sophie Coleman ended a nightmare season on a high by claiming double gold at the World Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh.

The 20-year-old considered quitting this summer after growing disillusioned with the sport but put her troubles behind her by winning the under-23 race and also helping Great Britain to team gold in the senior event.

Coleman previously won the under-20 world titles in 2008 and 2009 but said: “Winning this one meant a lot more than any of the others because of the year I have had.

“I did consider packing it in but if you talk to most athletes who have endured difficult times I think they would say the same. I wondered it it was really what I wanted to do but I have made a few changes since then and am looking to the future now.

“I am enjoying it again now and things are going well so while things are like that I am going to carry on. The moment I stop enjoying it is the time to stop.”

Coleman built up a lead with British team-mate Lois Rosindale on the initial 10km run but fell behind on the 40km bike ride in Holyrood Park.

Rosindale tired at the end of the cycle stage though to allow Coleman to close the gap and she continued to eat into her lead on the final 5km run before overtaking with 1km to go to win by 54 seconds in 2hr.15min.02sec.
