A twice taken injury-time penalty by former Burgess Hill striker Steve Harper condemned Lewes to a disappointing 3-2 defeat against a Thurrock side who had trailed 2-0 at the interval at Ship Lane.

Gary Holloway put Rooks ahead just after the halfway point of the first period, steering home a low Jay Saunders cross.

Two minutes later the lead should have been doubled when Jean-Michel Sigere's shot hit the bar and bounced over the line but the linesman failed to award a goal.

It seemed likely to be immaterialonce Jamie Cade had raced clear to notch his fifth goal of the season on the halfhour but a low shot by Thurrock midfielder Hassan Nyang on 55 minutes proved to be the turning point.

Matt Lovell equalised from close range with 12 minutes remaining then, after home defender Leigh Harrington was sent off and Cade had missed a great chance to restore the Lewes lead, Harper tucked away his penalty awarded for a foul by Leon Legge.

He got a second chance after Lewes keeper Paul Wilkerson was adjudged to have moved off his line when the striker had fired his first effort wide.

Burgess Hill's Westview Trophy tie against Wingate and Finchley tonight has been postponed following the death of Wingate's Simon Patterson in a car accident on Saturday.

The match has been rescheduled for September 26.
