Two Sussex golfers are heading for the big time after winning titles at the prestigious Nick Faldo Series.

Ben Evans, from Staplecross, and Worthing's Darren Renwick dominated at Celtic Manor to win their respective age groups.

Evans, who only just arrived in time after flying back from Australia, shot 71, 71, 69 to win by three strokes.

Renwick won the under-16s by seven strokes with rounds of 72, 72, 75.

Evans, 19, said: "It is the biggest win I've had when you think previous winners include the likes of Paul Doherty.

"I was delighted to win the series. It certainly made a difference having 54 holes in two days to contend with but overall I was happy and very pleased with the result.

"I think Nick (Faldo) was impressed because I had not long been off the plane from Australia where I represented England in an amateur event.

"In a couple of weeks I go to Spain for the second of three stages to getting a European Tour card and this will give me a lift."

Evans, a member at Rye and Sedlescombe, made light of the testing conditions .

The weather did not relent on the second day when he was partnered by Rory McIlroy, the 17-year-old from Belfast, who was his closest challenger.

Evans had been in Canberra representing the EGU in the Federal Cup where he finished 25th.

He will shortly compete in the second stage of the PGA European Tour school in Spain.

His father, Glyn, said: "He will turn pro only when the time is right.

"It would have to be on the Challenge Tour at least.

"He is young and still needs to learn a lot about golf and life. It would be foolish to rush him."

Evans has tasted success as a member of Team Faldo before and won his age group in Hong Kong and was runner-up in the under-21s final last year.

Faldo said: "I was very impressed with the level of play. Ben had just come back from Australia but went on to capitalise on an overnight lead and came out on top of a very strong field.

"This was our tenth tournament series and, in that time, we have gone from a competition with close to 300 competitors to a global initiative that is now creating opportunities for more than 3,000 young golfers."

In the Faldo Series (under-18s), Dan Casey (ESN) failed to make the cut and Tiffany Hewetson, of East Brighton, did not qualify in the girls' event on the last day.

This week Evans is at Woodhall Spa tuning his game with the England A squad.

Renwick, who attends Chichester College, made his 13th appearance for England Boys at Hartlepool in the 8-7 defeat against Scotland.

Renwick lost his singles and foursomes .
