The Voice definitely unearthed a gem in 21-year-old student Colet Selwyn.

Originally from India, Colet is now living in Scotland. He stunned just about everyone, including coaches, Ricky Wilson, Boy George and Paloma Faith, with his audition.

Colet opened his mouth and a deep voice boomed out for the country and western rendition of This Ole House, a song popularised by Shakin’ Stevens in the 1980s.

None of the panel hit their buzzers, but they were all visibly surprised when they saw who had auditioned.

Ricky bounded to the stage and playfully pretended to look elsewhere for the singing contestant.

“Where is he?” he called out. “Where is he?” the Kaiser Chiefs frontman yelled before shaking Colet’s hand.

Boy George said: “Often on the show, you hear someone and you think you’ve got a really clear idea of what they’re going to look like, hence Ricky scouring the stage for you.

“It’s what I call a beautiful contradiction. It’s almost impossible to connect you, the way that you look culturally and age-wise to that style of music, so well done.”, Boy George, Paloma Faith and Ricky Wilson on The Voice, Boy George, Paloma Faith and Ricky Wilson on The Voice (Guy Levy/Wall To Wall/BBC)

Twitter was divided, with many sharing the surprise felt by the coaches. However, others felt the preconceived notions bordered on prejudice.

Wow! What a voice

No to cultural stereotypes
