A new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has opened to help reduce waiting times.

Bognor residents can now have medical scans at the brand new mobile CDC on the University of Chichester's Bognor Regis campus in Upper Bognor Road.

The CDC, which is operated by UHSussex, has CT and MRI scanners to allow people to be tested and receive diagnoses away from hospital.

This aims to help reduce the strain on hospitals, reduce waiting times and speed up the diagnostic process.

This is because scans at hospitals can sometimes be cancelled due to urgent cases.

The aim is also to reduce travel time for patients by allowing them to access scans in locations other than hospitals.

CDC operational manager Jemma Deane said: "We are so pleased to have now opened our CDCs across the breadth of Sussex, to enable patients access to a healthier, more connected community.

"This centre saw more than 100 patients within the first week of opening."

The centre, which is in partnership with healthcare solution provider InHealth, will also serve as a space for delivering scan images to support patients on elective care journeys and those referred for cancer diagnosis.

It will be open from Monday through to Saturday each week and will be staffed by a team of professionals.

A spokesman for The University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust said: "CDCs are part of a wider NHS initiative to introduce community hubs where patients can use diagnostic services separate from acute hospitals.

"Designed to help speed up diagnosis and improve patient experience, the CDC allows patients to access planned diagnostic care nearer to their home, making it simpler to receive healthcare and eliminating lengthy journeys further afield.

"This means shorter waiting times for patients and reducing the risk of cancellations which can happen when more urgent cases within hospitals take priority."

The trust has also opened CDCs elsewhere including at the Amex Stadium in Falmer.

The main CDC is at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham, which opened earlier this year.

The CDC is in phase two of its development to allow the centre to also diagnose issues relating to echocardiography, gynaecological and respiratory processes.

Work is expected to be complete by Autumn 2024.
