A BURGER van owner has vowed to name one of his best sellers after The Argus to thank us for helping him remain at his favourite spot.

Paul Newton has been running Better Bites at the Pavilion Retail Park in Brighton for 22 years so when he was told his lease was not being renewed he was heartbroken.

But he was delighted when The Argus stepped in and property agents extended his stay on the site next to Lewes Road, close to Halfords, for at least three months.

“Thank you to The Argus,” he said. “It’s brilliant.

“I’m very pleased with what The Argus has done and I appreciate the reporter and photographer coming to see me so quickly.”

Paul is so chuffed he plans to rename his popular bacon and cheeseburger The Argus Burger.

The 57-year-old, from The Brow, in Woodingdean, originally contacted the newspaper when he was sent a letter from John Johnson, the managing director of Retail Concession Catering, which manages the lease.

The letter said the land agent had advised that Paul’s lease had expired and would not be renewed.

Paul was told he must vacate the premises immediately as he was trading without consent on the car park.

When The Argus called Mr Johnson he promised he was trying to help.

True to his word he called back the same day and said Better Bites was being given another three months.

Paul said he first found out that he was being given an extension when he read the newspaper the next day.

He said: “I read The Argus the next morning and later they phoned to tell me.

“We are trying to stay and we’ll see what happens. They might extend it.”

Paul also thanked his loyal customers after they vowed to fight for him to stay and sign a petition.

He said: “They have all been great.”
