MORE than 120 people attended a free cancer health and wellbeing event.

The day, held at the Amex stadium at Falmer, was organised by Albion In The Community, the official charity of Brighton and Hove Albion.

It was designed to showcase the support available locally to people experiencing cancer – including AITC’s own Brighter Outlook project.

Brighter Outlook provides free, personalised physical activity for people living with, or beyond, cancer.

More than 300 people in Brighton and Hove have already benefited from AITC’s support.

The charity’s Brighter Outlook team was among a list of guest speakers and a number of people signed up to take part in Brighter Outlook as a result.

As well as AITC’s own in-house cancer support projects, the charity also welcomed representatives from a range of other organisations, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Age UK Brighton and Hove, the NHS, Shine Cancer Support and Brighton and Hove City Council.

Visitors were invited to spend the morning visiting nearly 30 information stalls before breaking for lunch, followed by a programme of guest speakers in the afternoon.

Included on the list of guest speakers were Macmillan dietician Mhairi Donald, who gave a talk on eating well, and Ruth Edwards and Heidi Pession from The Martlets Hospice rehabilitation team, who spoke about managing fatigue.

Siobhan Meaker, AITC’s health manager, said: “One in two of us will be affected by cancer in our lifetime and every day in Sussex 28 people will be newly diagnosed so the need for an event such as this is paramount.

“With advances in treatment helping more and more people to live for longer, our event was aimed at helping people to live well.

“We were able to showcase local support available in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and the feedback was hugely positive.”
