Peronalised e-commerce software could help slash the number of customers who ditch their online purchases, costing business £6 billion.

Research suggests more than two-thirds of online buyers abandon their transactions with delivery costs often the reason.

Bosses at leading parcel and carrier manager Global Freight Solutions (GFS), which recently moved from Billingshurst to Horsham, claim a new system will overcome this problem by giving buyers greater choice in how they receive goods.

It is hoped GFS Checkout will dramatically improve the chances of purchases being delivered first time while giving consumers more choice in the shipping process.

The system will be made available to retailers as a free plug-in’ for easy web integration and can be installed in minutes.

Managing Director Neil Cotty said it would be good for the retailer, carrier and consumer.

He said: “We are convinced what we have created genuinely offers a broad range of retailers the facility to tackle the issue of sales lost late in the online transaction process and increases the choice of delivery options available to consumers.

“There is a large body of research showing how transparency around the choice and the cost of delivery is a critical factor in whether shoppers actually go through with purchases.

“Simply by giving customers the power to choose the date of their delivery helps improve the prospect of getting purchases to the people at the first time of asking.

“This is good for the retailer, the carrier and the consumer.”

A study by independent e-commerce analyst The Baymard Institute concluded an average of almost 70% of shoppers ditched prospective purchases.

And a survey of 2,000 consumers by eDigital Research late found 65 per cent of consumers blamed “unreasonable” shipping costs for not completing a purchase, costing retailers £6 billion during 2013.
