A BAKING sensation is rising to the occasion with cakes for One Direction.

Mr Bake, based in Brighton, is embarking on a rebellious baking mission and carving a niche in the city scene.

Founders Ed Hallifax and Tommy Gwatkin boast a brash and bold style that has brought New York dessert the cronut – an unholy combination of doughnuts and croissants – to Sussex.

When Tommy and Ed made a cake for One Direction, Harry Styles said it was “sick” live on BBC Radio 1 to his millions of fans.

Mr Bake has also stepped outside the baking realm and served burgers inside deep fried Cronut buns for a fat beauty pageant, while serving up bakes to fashion bloggers for ASOS.

Over the last few weeks they have served cupcakes to VIPs at Amity Fest, a three-day festival featuring nine of the top YouTube vloggers including Brighton-based Zoella and Alfie Deyes.

The Brighton bakery was personally requested by Alfie Deyes to do the cupcakes after he was impressed with Mr Bake.

Each month they hold a foodie summit in Brighton and have recently welcomed The Great British Bake Off’s Ruth Clemens, Howard Middleton, Cathryn Dresser, as well as pastry chef Will Torrent and Bake Off winner Edd Kimber to discuss their shared passion for French patisseries.
