A TATE gallery in Eastbourne is expecting to attract 120,000 visitors this year.

Towner has a 4,000-strong collection and turns over £1.2 million a year.

The gallery, known for modern British art and a growing collection of international contemporary works, attracted 10,000 visitors last year – but hopes to make that 120,000 in 2014/15.

The gallery also employs 12 full-time staff, 12 part-time staff and 42 freelance contractors.

The figures, recently released by Tate, aim to show the economic benefit of art galleries to the UK economy.

Towner also supports public programmes including in drug rehabilitation and mental health and has worked with more than 1,000 young offenders.

Housed for more than 80 years in a Georgian manor house, Towner relocated to a £8.58 million seafront property (pictured right) designed by Rick Mather Architects in 2009.

Emma Morris, Executive Director, Towner said: “Towner welcomes over 120,000 people from all walks of life to our accessible building.

“We pride ourselves on providing inspiring, enriching art experiences to people living in Eastbourne and across the South East.”
