A BUILDING contractor has been appointed to carry out the first phase of an £85 million shopping centre revamp.

Kier Construction has won the contract for the extension to the Arndale Centre in Eastbourne.

The first £2 million phase is to create a modern glass atrium at the Arndale’s west entrance and upgrade nearby shopfronts and facades in keeping with the new extension.

Neil Crawford of Legal & General Property, said: “It is great to show the people of Eastbourne our vision for the future of the centre and to physically start moving things forward and changing the town.”

Phil Durigan of Kier Construction said the company "has a real affinity with the region and considerable knowledge and experience of working with the local supply chain”.

The first phase will be completed before Christmas and work on the main part of the 170,000 sqft extension is due to start next year.
