BRIGHTON is well known for its eccentricity and quirkiness.

But one B&B has taken it to another level after being named the funkiest in the UK.

Snooze, in St George’s Terrace, saw off 3,000 rivals to scoop the AA award, which neatly coincides with its tenth birthday.

The Kemp Town guesthouse was set up by old friends Tony Mead and Paul Munton who bonded in Sheffield over a love of music, fashion and design.

While from the outside it looks like a traditional, unassuming Victorian building, from the inside Snooze opens up into a truly unique visual vintage design delight.

Each of the eight rooms is individually styled with original mid-century pieces discovered at flea markets, car boot sales and eBay.

Tony said: “Everything is original pieces from the 50s, 60s and 70s. We don’t do reproductions, it’s all authentic.

“It’s meant to be a relaxing laid back vibe, cool and quirky, in a unique setting.

"We love the mid century style and didn’t want to do a run of the mill kind of thing, we wanted to stand out.

“It’s definitely got a wow factor. Customers come from all over the world to come and stay."

Tony previously worked in IT recruitment while Paul taught design and technology, but both were unsatisfied with their careers.

It was while complaining over a pint that they decided to come together and open the unique B&B in Brighton with their wives Katryn Mead and Charlotte Munton.

Tony said: “Paul said he wanted to set up a B&B but didn’t have the funds, so we decided to do it together.

“We put together our life savings and houses to raise the money, and when we bought it it was pretty old school, and we didn’t have enough money to do it up, we had to wait seven months and save up."

The colourful vintage style has found favour with young and old alike - though they always make sure the service is as good as the look.

Tony added: “Vintage stuff is quite cool, the prices have gone up, and it’s getting more rare to find.

“For younger people its cool and quirky, and for the older generation it appeals because its nostalgia.

“But we always make sure it’s not style over substance.

"We wouldn't have won this awards if it wasn't super clean and well-run."
