MORE of Brighton's seafront will be closed off this winter for essential structural repairs beneath the city's main coastal road.

Dukes Mound in Madeira Drive, Brighton, seafront is to be closed for around three months for essential structural repairs to the high retaining wall supporting the A259 Marine Parade above.

The seafront slip road will be closed off on Monday and is scheduled to reopen on February 3 though the downhill side will reopen at weekends from Friday evening until Monday morning following consultation with seafront traders.

The road will also be opened over the Christmas period between Tuesday December 20 and January 4.

Council bosses said the closure and the works had been planned to avoid conflicting with the busy summer period of events along Madeira Drive.

Cllr Gill Mitchell, chairwoman of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “This is another example of us working hard to protect and improve the seafront.

"Between the piers we’re rebuilding the historic fishermen’s arches and Shelter Hall, strengthening the seafront road and are about to undertake major landscaping improvements on the lower prom.”
