A MAJOR fashion store has gone into administration putting hundreds of jobs at risk, including in Sussex.

An announcement was made yesterday afternoon that fashion chain Jaeger had gone into administration putting 700 UK jobs at risk.

The firm has two stores in the county, one in Pavilion Buildings in Brighton and one in Little London in Chichester.

The company was established by British businessman Lewis Tomalin as Dr Jaeger’s Sanitary Woollen System Co Ltd in 1884 to capitalise on a craze for wool-jersey long johns inspired by the theories of German scientist Dr Gustav Jaeger.

Dr Jaeger’s writings about the value of wearing animal fibres (not cotton) next to the skin had attracted fans including George Bernard Shaw and explorer Ernest Shackleton.
