A creative anthology sharing the history and experiences of gay people in Brighton was launched at the Jubilee Library.

Queer In Brighton is a collection of personal stories, photographs creative writing from all ages and cultures.

Maria Jastrzębska, book co-editor, said: “It’s really important that we celebrate who we are.”

The book was made to bring together the cultural history of the LGBT community and has been released alongside an exhibition and film.

Lesley Wood was the project manager for Queer In Brighton.

She said: “It’s our history that gives us a sense of identity and community.”

The project has taken almost 18 months to gather interviews, photographs and stories for publication.

In her speech at the book launch on Wednesday, February 26, Ms Wood said organisers were expecting 45 people to be involved, but 250 people turned up to contribute.

The project was subsidised by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Pictures from the accompanying exhibition Not Going Shopping can be seen all over Brighton and Hove on public buildings.
