Labour's East Brighton by-election candidate named

Chaun Wilson was selected last week as the Labour and Co-operative candidate for the East Brighton by-election on October 18. She is highly likely to get in.

Last the May elections in 2011, Labour won by a large majority: the three candidates, all sitting councillors of long standing, polled over 16% of the electorate. At a turnout of 40% of the total voters of over 10,000, nearly 1,845 voted Labour, easily beating the Conservative Party (856) and Green Party (800). The LibDems only fielded two candidates (270) when they could have had three. The Trade Union and Socialists Against Cuts candidate got 142 votes.

The Conservative Party have selected an 18 year old, Joe Miller. The Green Party have yet to publish the name of their candidate.

Your figures for May 2011 election are a little misleading.

The Greens came forth (955 votes) after Labour, with the Conservatives (940) trailing the Greens.

Here are the results for top five candidates in East Brighton 2011:

Gill Mitchell (Lab): 2059
Warren Morgan (Lab): 1862
Craig Turton (Lab): 1616
Ali Ghanimi (Green): 955
Peter Booth (Con): 940

i averaged out the votes for the 5 political parties that contested the ward. It can never be a "like for like" by-election as there is only one candidate per party as opposed to three last year.
The fact is Labour is odds-on to win, with the Cons. beating the Greens (say, 3-1?) on this occasion in this particular by-election ward.
More odds if I can find any bookie to take the bet.....
