The New York-based cabaret singer and drag artist made his Brighton Festival premiere to applause, cheers and laughter.
Mixing jazz, pop and experimental genres, he took the audience on a musical journey through his days at Capitol Records to being lead singer of Strange Party.
The set was an enjoyable mix of covers and original songs, opening with a haunting, almost eerie, version of Cream’s White Room.
An entrancing and emotionally rich vocal, Joey showcased formidable skills, managing to sound raspy and raw yet elegant. At times singing without a microphone, his vocals soared through the theatre, backed fantastically by a grand pianist, double bassist and drummer.
Audience participation was a highlight, particularly during a cheeky and flirtatious performance of All Of Me. He channelled Billie Holiday to beautiful effect and the crowd lapped up the scandalous humour and wit.
He looked sleek and stylish in a black tassled dress, long gloves and large hoop earrings.
Other covers included Why Don’t You Do Right and the sizzling Summertime, but lively, original song Jazzo Lozzo held its own.
The finale included A Hard Day’s Night and The Ronettes’ Be My Baby, which became a sing-along and received a standing ovation.
