Death From Above 1979 play drum and bass, but not as you know it. The Canadian duo’s distinctive brand of thundering rock was fuelled by bassist Jesse F. Keeler’s relentless riffs and Sebastien Grainger’s athletic efforts on drums.

This was a full throttle performance of heavy rock that left the sweaty, gathered throng frenzied.

After their return to the stage in 2011 – six years after breaking up and now 11 years since their debut album hit the shelves – this was the first time many will have seen DFA1979’s breakneck show in the flesh. To say it was worth the wait is a huge understatement.

Keeler’s bass riffs chugged ceaselessly through pounding renditions of Cheap Talk, Trainwreck 1979, Turn It Out, Romantic Rights and a frantic blast through Pull Out. With the sweat dripping from his every pore, Grainger at one point looked like a man who’d jumped fully clothed into a swimming pool, before he succumbed and removed his shirt only to ring it out like a sodden rag.

Ultimately Death From Above 1979 left you feeling like you wished you were 16 again. Surely that is the biggest compliment for any rock n roll band?
