In their black sparkly waistcoats and scarlet ties, Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus were a vision of dapper professionalism.
Carefully aligned in their rows, all eyes focused on musical director Marc Yarrow as they sang out, smiling.
This concert linked a mixture of songs and brief monologues loosely based on the theme of holidays and travel.
Pablo Cazorla and Nick Ford led a moving version of Can You Feel The Love Tonight, while the elaborate arrangement of harmonies on Lady Marmalade was uplifting.
A surprisingly bubbly version of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now contrasted with a slow and sombre cover of Miley Cyrus’s Wrecking Ball.
Standout solos included a haunting Wild Is The Wind by António Braga de Silva, Ralph Corke’s hilarious Taylor The Latte Boy and Stephen Tucker’s Noel Coward-style I Can’t Quite Remember Your Name.
For their joyful encore, Your Disco Needs You by Kylie Minogue, lighting coordinator Mike Medway flooded the elaborate church altarpiece behind the singers with dancing rainbow light, and at last the performers cut loose with coordinated choreography.
Performances by this beloved community choir are always enjoyable, and their commitment was exemplified by the two singers who got married on Friday before performing that evening.
