A full house at the Pavilion Theatre sang along to the Strictly Come Dancing theme tune as the curtains rose to reveal four dancers swirling ominously in hooded cloaks and masks. Although the routines in this show were connected by a Hollywood theme, Eyes Wide Shut wasn’t an obvious choice to reference.

Pasha Kovalev and Katya Virshilas are best known for their character-driven Latin routines; the rest of their show was colourful and dramatic, with a Dirty Dancing medley that drew gasps of satisfaction from the crowd as they performed the big lift.

A beautiful rumba to Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing ended tenderly with Pasha cradling Katya in his arms.

The two stars were joined by British champion dancers Lindsey Muckle and Ryan Hammond for a Grease tribute and a spicy, high-kicking routine to Chicago’s Cell Block Tango, while 63 beaming young performers from local dance school Glendale Theatre Arts charmed the crowd with two energetic group dances.

Three couples from the audience bravely attempted to learn the paso doble on stage. From awkwardly clutching capes like damp tea towels, the men quickly gained confidence to swish them flamboyantly.

This joyful, spangled spectacle left the crowd wanting more.
