On the third night of Tom Walsh’s Fringe show, the Irish comic boldly announced he was pleased that more people had come than on previous nights. It was one of seemingly hundreds of self-deprecating moments throughout his hour-long set which charmed the small crowd.

Based loosely on the US’s popular TED talks, Walsh’s Powerpoint presentation took for its main theme the subject of hobbies and he breezed through pastimes via onscreen graphs and photos with numerous dips into his own life history. But never once did it appear scripted – at one point he talked the audience through an Italian karaoke video, with the joke funnier as the clock ticked.

At the close, dressed solely in swimming trunks, he mock tap-danced for what seemed like an eternity. This was part of his charm, stretching the audience’s patience, continually reeling it back with surreal, illogical one-liners.

While it could be argued the show would have been better at half the length, overall Walsh’s personality was enough to ensure everyone left with a smile on their face, despite – or maybe because of – the confusion that preceded.
