Milton Jones is best known for his Radio 4 show. Right now he is “On The Road”, a 37-date national tour. The Dome was close to full, perhaps with many people wondering how Jones was going to fill an entire evening with his brilliant one-liners.

He started as his own grandfather – in other words a doddery version of himself – which, although funny, delayed meeting the star of the show. Up-and-coming comedian Chris Martin finished the first half.

The second half was Milton as Milton, spiked-up hair, orange trousers and the trademark dead-pan delivery. Then followed a barrage of scintillating one-liners and puns – “I saw a sheep pole dancing... in a kebab shop” – occasionally punctuated by Jones’s Milligan-esque matchstick drawings that he projects on to a screen.

Throughout he invited audience participation and one person became a constant contributor. Jones dealt with him well, which the crowd appreciated, but it was unusual to have a club atmosphere in such a large room.

Other than two weak songs, Milton’s material was excellent and his timing spot on. One hour was enough. Laughing that hard is tiring work.
