Brighton promoters Throw Some Shapes are known for bringing innovative musicians to the dark clubs of the city, and this evening was no exception.
First to play was B’KA, a local producer who makes silky smooth sample-based hip-hop. The dreaminess eased the listeners out of the cold night and into an evening of experimental music, accompanied by projected visuals.
Next was Titeknots, an unbilled surprise with a live house set that was incredibly, well, tight. Not much is known about this producer apart from that he released a single on Tru Thoughts last month, but his set was vibrant, fun and constantly shifting. House music in Brighton can be a bit dull – this was nothing of the sort.
The penultimate act was Mocksun, who has a recent release on Project Mooncircle and has a steady buzz rising around his ambient, softly powerful and progressive music.
And finally, the dandy pioneer Daedelus played. A true original, the American producer, also known as Alfred Darlington, is a joy to watch live. There aren’t many producers who perform a live set in a suit and tie and enjoy it so much they grin throughout.
His new album was billed as having emotional, deep influences, but that wasn’t reflected in a live show which had the dancefloor heaving.
