“Peace and love devoid of politics are my mottos”, declared Richard Durrant, before slipping into a bit of a rant about the unfinished footbridge and traffic jams in Shoreham.

Otherwise good-humoured, the barefoot guitarist-composer stands out on stage for his love of Paraguay and his accomplishment but, after all, he’s just one of the locals gathered in camaraderie at the Ropetackle.

This passionate man has a knack for making otherwise obscure names and classical musical influences as accessible as his opinion on the footbridge.

On Thursday evening we celebrated butterfly clouds and the music of Durrant’s Paraguayan colleagues, credited on the two CDs released to date, part of a planned trilogy inspired by “the greatest guitarist-composer, Barrios”.

Kike’s characterful Newcastle To Peterborough is an earworm to welcome – track four on Hijo De Hombre CD.

Rodrigo’s guitar concerto was an absolute treat, with Durrant joined by keyboardist Howard Beach. The pair played as if transmitting the music – how Durrant plays from memory is awesome enough.

Durrant is off to Paraguay soon to record – the third instalment of the trilogy will be out in February.

Meanwhile, he’ll be sending video diaries back of a forthcoming “tree gig” – watch this space.
