Texas are just over halfway through a UK tour to promote their long-awaited new album The Conversation – so you would expect a polished performance.

However, this was much more and long-standing fan or not, it was hard not to leave revitalised.

The standing ovation theoretically started from the outset. Sharleen Spiteri’s confident stage presence and voice were wonderfully strong, her enjoyment palpable.

Given that, there was no sense of lead singer and band. When a particularly vocal audience member loudly requested You Owe It All To Me, the band obliged by starting to play, with Sharleen then joining in.

It was just a small taster, but demonstrated their ease with each other and their music.

From Summer Son and Black Eyed Boy bringing up the old guards to Conversation (part of the encore) bringing in the new, this was a fresh, invigorating gig. OK, so it was 2000’s Inner Smile that we (almost) ended on, but nothing felt out of place.

There was no frustration at the desire to forget old hits – moreover appreciation for the audience’s clear love of them was gratefully acknowledged.

This was a, “Hi, we’re here again, let’s have another party” kind of a gig, and all the better for it.
