From the Medieval Church’s approval of brewing beer as a method of fundraising to the politics of prohibition, Wish Experience led a fun and energetic journey through the amber nectar’s origins.

Sadly Wednesday’s first performance of a two-night run fell victim to the January blues, with a very thin crowd in the theatre space – unfortunate for a piece which is so reliant on the participation of its audience.

The drink-along moments and direct contact with the crowd would have worked so much better if there were more there but clad in Star Trek-esque futuristic time travel uniforms, Trish Parry and Will Glenn did their level best to keep the energy up.

The result was an extremely likeable show, packed with fun facts and bolted together with occasional sci-fi gobbledegook to keep the ship sailing through time.

The message that people need to focus on independent brewers to stop beer falling into the hands of international conglomerates felt a little like preaching to the converted – particularly as Sussex has so many breweries and CAMRA-approved pubs.

But it was a message delivered with passion and enthusiasm which deserved a bigger audience to truly appreciate it.
