Poliça captivated a reverent audience at All Saints Church in Hove, leaving those in attendance wide-eyed with their expert command of dark, slinky synth hooks and R’n’B beats.
The Minneapolis five-piece are curious in that they have two live drummers, an impressive feat given that their songs are sprawling, twisting beasts with odd time signatures and stop-start rhythms.
In Channy Leaneagh they have one of the most promising singers around. She is shy between numbers with a polite audience, but when the songs start, her presence fills the cavernous venue. Her voice is bewitching, leading onlookers along paths and into places they’d prefer not to go, with heartfelt lyrics and a confident, complete delivery.
Leaneagh’s lines have just enough pop persuasion to get you singing along while Chris Bierden’s dark funk basslines grab you and pull you down into Poliça’s underworld. Chain My Name is a perfect example – it was impossible not to bounce along to the curious synth melody, while the bass unsettled with staccato stabs underneath Leaneagh’s echoed vocals.
Make no mistake, Poliça are a truly unique live experience.
