London Grammar made up for rescheduling their hugely anticipated Brighton Dome show with a truly astonishing performance to confirm themselves as one of the top new live acts in the country.

The Nottingham trio are set for a great 2014 after being nominated as best British breakthrough act at the Brits, but never revelled in their new-found stardom with an intimate yet enveloping display of moving musicianship – think The xx meets opera.

The previous gig was moved from its original date due to singer Hannah Reid getting the flu, yet her voice betrayed no hint of illness as she displayed her impressive range on opener Hey You, continually drawing gasps and applause as the band’s emotive chillwave filled the Dome.

Dominic “Dot” Major’s fine percussive work (be it samples or live kit) and expressive keys left space for guitarist Dan Rothman’s understated melodies to shine, and for Reid’s outstanding talent to take centre stage.

Rothman thanked the crowd and Reid wrapped a homemade fan banner tossed onstage around the guitarist.

The band returned to play a spellbinding encore with the banner flying around Rothman’s shoulders rather like a cape. On this evidence, the alternative scene has some new heroes.
