“I know what you’re thinking,” conceded Chris Ballew, the singer and founder of Presidents Of The United States Of America, introducing songs from the band’s new album, Kudos To You!, released little more than a week before this sold-out show. “Don’t do it. Well, we’re going to.”

Ballew’s mock-fretfulness might have been soothed by the fact his trio’s sixth full record was crowdfunded by fans within days, testifying to the unfailing popularity of these Seattle rock goofballs in their 21st year.

Surfing on their long-established wave of pop-grunge riffs and deadpan choruses, their subject matters are still frivolous. The loudest cheers were reserved for songs from their self-titled 1995 debut, a masterclass in slacker anthems.

Kick Out The Jams, featuring immortal promises of poodles in pockets and a rock show to remember, proved a killer opener, while the singalong to Dune Buggy was expertly orchestrated.

Their traditional finale, an even camper version of The Buggles’ Video Killed The Radio Star, seemed a fittingly ridiculous cover for a band with an effortless line in chord-powered humour.
