“Good mornin’, good mornin’!” Chances are you’ll know the opening lines of the song Good Morning even if you don’t quite know why – such is the legacy of the 1952 Hollywood blockbuster Singin’ In The Rain.

It’s also what makes stepping into the tap shoes of the film’s stars – Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds – for this stage adaptation such a challenge. It isn’t easy to match perfectly, but with an incredible cast and astonishing staging, this show finds a way.

Singin’ In The Rain tells the tale of how the talkies changed the face of cinema. James Leece as Don Lockwood is both accomplished and debonair, but it’s his voice which makes the heart truly soar. Stephane Anelli as Cosmo is sharply comic, Vicky Binns appals as the heinous Lina Lamont, and Amy Ellen Richardson is a genuine star. Bright like a tin of Quality Street, the ensemble are impressive too – and then, of course, there’s the rain. Real water literally pours from above the stage.

In a world where cinema has rendered the spectacular bland through excessive use of CGI, the pleasure of watching real people do marvellous things in brilliant ways is ever more joyful.

What a glorious feeling, I'm happy again!
