This was a gig of two equally magnificent halves. To emphasise the fairytale/mystical theme of the first section – much of it from her just-turned-silver album Wanderlust – Sophie wore a red Gretel-inspired dress. From the music-box like flurries in When The Storm Has Blown Over, to the touching Young Blood, the upbeat The Deer And The Wolf and the shouty 13 Little Dolls, Sophie delivered variety in volumes.

Disappearing with a wave and a “thank you, Brighton”, she shimmied on again in a sequinned leotard and diaphanous mini-dress for a disco-diva set. Take Me Home was first up – as if any invitation were needed, as by then everyone was spellbound by her thrilling vocals, brilliantly supported by two female violinist/vocalists, two guitarists, a keyboard player and a drummer.

A cover of Sing It Back was followed by Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer), with a finale (or so we all thought) of Murder On The Dancefloor. However, just as everyone was shuffling their jackets on, Sophie popped up towards the back of the room to treat those who had been craning their necks to see her to a perfectly-formed morsel of her glorious, unamplified tones to take home with them.
