Has the glorious All Saints Church at Hove ever heard anything like it before?
A saxophone solo soared towards its beautiful high arched ceilings as low sunlight streamed on to singer Paul Carrack through the rich colours of its stunning stained glass windows on Friday night.
Soon the evening light faded, but Carrack never seems to. His voice is warm as a log fire and his version of Brenda Lee’s marvellous weepy hit I’m Losing You was one of the captivating evening’s many highlights.
Carrack sounded like a mellow triple cocktail of Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke as he ripped through soul and rock and moved silkily through passionate numbers like the heart-melting Eyes Of Blue.
His status as a long-undiscovered star despite hits with Ace and Squeeze is a worn-out cliché, but the applause showed that his legion of loyal fans discerned genuine musical talent from mere fame.
Carrack delivered powerful versions of hits like Tempted and the emotion-charged The Living Years before ending with the Ace smash How Long? He also plugged tracks from his new album Rain Or Shine, as the bright evening turned to dull drizzle. Good heavens, Carrack even got the weather forecast right.
