It’s shaping up to be a decent few months for followers of conscious and alternative hip-hop, with Atmosphere, Dead Prez and De La Soul all bound for the Concorde 2’s stage.

It fell to Immortal Technique – AKA Peruvian born, Harlem bred rapper-activist Felipe Coronel – to light the fuse, bringing his message of revolution back to Brighton.

Tech’s a regular visitor to these parts, and was met with a typically rapturous reception. Backed by the talents of Constant Flow and Hasan Salaam, he wasted no time in igniting a chant of ‘Free Gaza’, taken up at deafening volume.

One of the most articulate and vociferous MCs on the live circuit, he gave his take on everything from corrupt US regimes to the environmental pillage of the third world.

There’s a good reason for all those Public Enemy comparisons, Tech’s politically-charged vehemence (and impressive stage presence) following in the footsteps of Chuck D. While the production of his songs was rarely in the same league, they certainly got feet moving this time around.

A brief freestyle section showcased his roots in old-school battle rap, as well as his dark sense of humour. All in all, some pretty impressive stuff.
