It must have been quite a week to be Scottish. Despite the results of the referendum, passions have run high, not least among the country’s musical community.

Time will tell on what lasting legacy the vote will leave and the possibility of bands returning with more politically charged future work.

One band that never lacked passion though, without the need for politics, is We Were Promised Jetpacks.

There was no mention of independence, or lack of it, on their return to Brighton, ahead of the release of their forthcoming third album, which showed the band have lost none of their venom.

Squeezed onto the tiny Komedia Studio stage, the now quintet managed to ignore the cosiness of the setting and sounded huge.

Unleashing the always anthemic Quiet Little Voices just two songs into their set showed their level of ambition and confidence, although the brooding Sore Thumb and explosive It’s Thunder And It’s Lightning were equally enthralling.

Their sky scraping indie rock swerved all of the typical clichés and channelled genuine sentiment. At least one member at all times seemed to have their eyes screwed tight, lost in their own sound.

The No vote may have won the referendum, but we should all say Yes to We Were Promised Jetpacks.
