Among those who were children between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, Knightmare has a cult following.
The popular CITV show enjoyed a decade of wowing its audience with dodgy costumes, fledgling CGI effects and catchphrases that were bellowed in every playground.
After its demise in 1994, the hallowed characters of evil Lord Fear, the revered Treguard and faithful camp elf Pickle had been retired to mere nostalgic memories.
But in 2013, this all changed: a theatre company revived the format and characters for a show at Edinburgh Festival, and this year they’re on tour around the country.
A lively crowd awaited them at The Old Market, with whooping cheers, raised drinks and a banner greeting Lord Fear as he stepped on stage.
There was an air of am-dram about the set and some occasional missed lines and improvisation, but this added to the general appeal.
The actors were dedicated to the original characters and seemed to be having fun on stage, which was equalled in the crowd.
By picking a participant from the audience, the actors were guaranteed an unpredictable and fun performance and this was certainly the case in Hove.
It was a must-see for anyone who remembered the original show.
