“UK Tours are easy,” frontman George Mitchell emotionlessly slurred, as he made his way to the stage to continue Eagulls’ hectic tour on Friday night.

Eagulls’ rapid rise in popularity has seen the band secure some pretty impressive slots this year.

When it was announced they were returning to Brighton’s intimate venue, unsurprisingly, tickets weren’t around for long.

The overall performance felt very well sculptured. Tracks from self-titled debut album were gormlessly spat out by Mitchell, as guitarists either side of him complimented the hard-hitting vocals with gritty riffs, expanding into huge, ambient drones for massive outros.

Initially, the band’s signature punch was painfully lacking. However, after a few digs at the soundman, some much-needed momentum was brought to the show.

At times the performance felt a little tired. Though this may be partially down to the dark aura portrayed by the group, Mitchell seemed to lack interest in his audience, extracting a huge amount of energy from the stationary onlookers.

A haunting performance fit for an arena venue, in theory, gave fans exactly what they were expecting. However, the overarching lack of enthusiasm, possibly due to the band’s premature rise to fame, is fairly concerning.
