I always loved ABBA’s music.

But I never imagined I would be sat listening to it in a cosy Brighton bar, as a man impersonating Bjorn pranced around the stage in a spangly, rather too clingy, flared cat suit.

It was a fitting end to a comic life coaching session – using the Swedish group’s lyrics and success as a guide on how to achieve everything you seek in life – and it was quite convincing.

The set was not tear-inducing hilarious but Mark Blayney’s clever quips and musical interludes, such as a performance of “chicken tikka” on stage to the tune of Chiquitita prompted laughter and chuckles from the audience. Everyone enjoyed the show.

The second offering as part of the Brighton Comedy Fringe event was Karen Sherrard’s TV gardening character Esme De Flange.

It was also well received – mostly due to the audience’s surprise of how many green fingered references could be construed as sexual innuendo.

Esme’s wanton and suggestive stage act was a mix of Nigella Lawson-esque chat and Charlie Dimmock-like gestures. There were sniggers and cackles from the audience at almost every description – as well as surprise and sometimes revulsion at a display of phallic plant pictures.
