Jonathan Agnew - Aggers to Test Match Special listeners - was a professional cricketer for Leicestershire in the 1980s.
He played for England three times. Now a cricket journalist for the BBC, this show was to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Sadly the venue wasn't full but the evening itself was most engaging.
Aggers chatted about his life in cricket for the first half and although not especially funny his tales were recounted with charm and displayed all the refinement of the well practiced after dinner speaker he is.
His fellow commentator Geoff Boycott was the butt of the best stories and we relived his famous 'leg over' bloomer involving the late Brian Johnson.
The second half was question and answer and Aggers managed to relax even further as he gave forth on Kevin Petersen and Twitter, being voted the number one thinking woman's crumpet, and a future where cricket will be played by the wealthy and watched only by the wealthy.
We learned the celeb interview he craves is Errol Brown of Hot Chocolate; the worst so far was the actor Edward Fox; and on the radio Aggers is indeed taller and more handsome than he is in real life.
