Award-winning vocalist, Claire Martin joined forces with saxophonist /vocalist Ray Gelato to provide what proved to be a truly swinging evening.

They celebrated the Great American Songbook along with jazz classics and blues. Musical tributes were paid to Louis Jordan, The Andrews Sisters, Johnny Mercer amongst others.

Their 30-year friendship provided them with the ease that enabled them to duet so well.

Their version of the Peggy Lee number You’ve Come A Long Way From Louisiana was a scorcher – a fine blend of voice and sax. They also had great fun with Baby It’s Cold Outside.

However on a question of balance I would have preferred a programme featuring less of Gelato’s vocals and more instrumental work from him. His solo, Being Here With You, proved the point.

Being greedy I wanted more solo numbers from Martin. Her rendition of Can’t We Be Friends and Everything Happens To Me was sublime and showed why she has been at the top for so long.

She glided effortlessly from swinging a number to caressing it with distinctive interpretations that were inventive but never distorted.

Sensitive and enhancing backing came from the Dave Newton Trio with Newton contributing some exhilarating piano solos.
