Dr Kat Arney (Biology, Cambridge University) and Helen Arney (Physics, Imperial College) are scientific evangelists who employ music, comedy and intellectual rigour to inform and entertain.
They are blessed with such a diversity of academic and broadcasting credits that, if they were Victorians, we’d say that we don’t make’em like that anymore.
Here they promised to “lift up lift up the velvet crinoline of history to reveal the naked ankle of truth,” although, as Dr Kat let slip early doors, “we’re actually huge fans of the Victorians”.
Their breathless delivery, sometimes reminiscent of a semi-prepared best man’s speech, sprinted through Victorian phenomena, with the audience encouraged to express a stout “Hurrah!” or a raucous “Bah!”
The Victorian beard, for instance, went through a similar evolution to our own. In 1830, it was a minority habit confined to that 10 per cent made up of “tramps, revolutionaries and charlatans”. By 1860, they achieved Peak Beard, with 60 per cent of gentlemen sporting the “Crimean Look”.
And so on, with a “Bah!” for asbestos, sexism, eugenics and grey squirrels, and a “Hurrah!” for emoticons, Association Football, democracy, and this remarkable sister act.
