With his debut feature Heaven Adores You director Nickolas Rossi created a tender love letter to Elliott Smith and his music.

As well as unreleased demos and early recordings there were interviews with Smith’s inner circle including close friends Tony Lash, Larry Crane, Jon Brion, Pete Krebs, Joanna Bolme and sister Ashley Welch.

The full extent of his drug use, and the mystery surrounding his death were largely glossed over - with girlfriend Jennifer Chiba not even warranting a name check.

Instead this film concentrated on the music and worked as a perfect introduction to the uninitiated.

To accompany radio recordings, and cover the lack of video documents made during Smith’s lifetime, Rossi used shots of empty street scenes from the cities Smith inhabited. Occasionally the choice of shots became repetitive, but the absence of human figures perhaps underlined Smith’s loss.

The one-off screening by Hackney-based Doc N Roll Festival was augmented by a Skype Q & A with the likeable and clearly devoted Rossi, as well as performances of Smith’s music.

Grand Palace’s male/female harmonies successfully recalled the distinctive double-tracking Smith used to record all his vocals.

But the stand-out performance came from Brighton-based Astra Forward, whose brave opening choice – a synth-drone-driven Roman Candle - not only captured the spirit of the original song, but moulded it into something new. Definitely a talent to watch.
