The Ghost Lights tour aims to give performers who usually do noisy, up-tempo sets for a “pilled-up” crowd the chance to strip their music back to basics in a more intimate, cabaret-seated atmosphere.
Rex Domino accompanied his wittily rhyming lyrics on ukulele. From rueful morning-after song Stale Poppadoms Personify Us to slow klezmer-influenced singalong Open Your Eye, the audience filled up.
World champion beatboxer and sonic experimenter Bellatrix used her loop box to build up layers of vocals and percussion on River, occasionally slipping back into her beatbox comfort zone. Four years’ training as a jazz double bass player influenced her track Sweet Stuff, her cackling vocals adding to its menacing atmosphere.
Beatboxer Reeps One switched between virtuoso party-starting and calmly chatting about his art. He sat playing spontaneously with sounds, making squelches skitter across the stage then hilariously summoning “Dave” to unblock the plumbing.
Barefoot, bathrobe-wearing Dizraeli relaxed in the candlelit environment replicating where his thoughtful songs and tributes were originally written, before summoning the others back to improvise.
Rex Domino stood uncomfortably, hands in pockets, yet the slowly evolving soundscapes led into an explosive dance party, highlighting the range of performers’ talents and their mutual respect for each other.
