Last year’s Great Escape was headlined by fiery US pop star Kelis who played a soulful set which oozed gravitas and style.

In Lion Babe it seems she has a successor.

While it is no doubt unfair on Jillian Hervey’s collaborative partner Lucas Goodman, it was the wonderfully coifed frontlady of the Lion Babe duo who stole the show.

Unmistakeable due to her golden mane of an afro and sexy onstage demeanour, Hervey’s voice had the twang of New York.

Thankfully she had stage presence to match her look. She could add her voice to a man playing the spoons and it would still be captivating.

She was sartorially aided by Goodman, who played the role of number two well, fiddling with his production controller and allowing his partner to dominate centre stage.

Strutting through the duo’s short set at the Arch she seemed entirely at ease with the limelight.

Working through Lion Babe’s short repertoire it was obvious why they were one of the buzz acts of this year’s festival.

The Pharell-produced Wonder Woman is as good a pop song as you’re likely to hear and opener Jump Hi was not bad either.

By the time set-ender Treat Me Like Fire was done Lion Babe were the pride of the festival.
