These reshaping of the Viking sagas were prime entertainment for children, back in the days when kids TV was less frenetic and CGI just a random collection of letters.

Would the tales translate to a stage show? Would modern-day children appreciate the simple story-telling that captivated audiences 50 years ago?

The answer to both questions was a resounding ‘yes’- the Third Party production was an exciting mix of live action, puppetry and clips from the original TV programme, one that kept the children of all ages thoroughly entertained.

Some of the puppetry was marvellously inventive: a cloak that turned into a group of crows; the friendly Ice Dragon and some faithful representations of the Nogs themselves The show was based around two different stories: Noggin’s accession to the throne and his search for a bride, and the hunt for the dragon.

What was most striking was how they touched on themes of the Norse sagas but made them so accessible to kids.

The cast of four tackled all the roles with brio, particularly Anthony Gleave switching swiftly between the villainous Nogbad (lapping up the boos) and a diminutive Scot. There was plenty of audience participation and even a Michael Gove joke for the parents: just great fun all round.
