The devil is in the detail and that is where the Illegal Eagles soared at the Theatre Royal Brighton.
The Illegal Eagles have been running 19 years but the introduction of fine multi-instrumentalist Garreth Hicklin and superb vocalist Greg Webb has made the sound richer and remarkably like the original Eagles.
Fine musicianship captured the little fills, chops and solos beautifully behind the gorgeous harmonies. It gave everything from the opening Take It Easy to the superb if inevitable closer Hotel California a remarkably close resemblance to the work of Don Henley and company.
Webb has a New Kid In Town, his newborn daughter Hattie a small hit at 4lb 12oz, and he celebrated by playing fine guitar on the song, while Hicklin showed his versatility as he took the lead strongly on vocals from behind the drums.
The hits rolled but emotional high spots included Webb producing the most soulful vocal of the night on Heart of the Matter. Al Vosper ran him close on Wasted Time and a superbly-handled Lying’ Eyes, while Keith Atack played with great finesse on the instrumental I Dreamed There Was No War.
If you like the Eagles you will love this band.
