The Chameleons were the only good thing to have come out of the town of Middleton near Manchester since the Battle of Flodden Field.

Poised for greatness and with an American tour lined up in 1986, the group split due to infighting and the stresses of being screwed over by the man.

Frontman and bass player Mark Burgess is the original member of the group which now tours Europe and the US as Chameleons Vox, playing to 40-somethings who never quite found anything which came close to replacing them. Their live sound stripped away the over-production of their three studio albums and put the tightly woven guitars back in their rightful place upfront.

Mark’s voice was stronger than of old and together with the rest of the band (who looked almost nervous of hitting a wrong note and disappointing the highly-expectant crowd) they played a tight set.

Opening with Swamp Thing and closing with fan favourite, Home Is Where the Heart Is, the crowd sang every word and tapped out each beat.

Our fix lasted 90 minutes and we left hoping for and wondering when the next one would come.
