In this slick tribute, clips of Judy Garland’s face, stories and singing are displayed interspersed with live singing and dancing in sophisticated red and black outfits.

Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft is introduced by a clip of her mother singing to her younger self. She retells family stories, and delivers several songs including a moving version of The Man That Got Away.

The Boyfriends, a troupe of six male dancers, ably perform Arlene Phillips’ challenging choreography: in the elaborate Trolley Song routine, everyone onstage channels a different character while rapidly shifting their chairs to change direction.

Among the featured singers, Rachel Stanley’s voice is most similar to Garland’s: she dances charmingly with Darren Bennett to A Couple of Swells.

Louise Dearman’s powerfully dramatic rendition of Stormy Weather is compelling, while her friendly duet with Luft on the Get Happy / Happy Days / Hooray for Love medley Garland originally performed with Barbra Streisand is a showstopper.

The oddest moment comes with the final song, Over The Rainbow, when the cast turn their backs to stand reverently watching Garland on screen as if at a memorial service.

Despite the pre-recorded music and tap dance sounds, anyone who enjoys Strictly will appreciate this production.
